Trip Planning

Pre-Trip Checklist

Visa & Entry
Visa Waiver Program nationals need an ESTA ($21, apply online at least 72 hours before travel). Travelers from non-waiver countries need a B1/B2 visitor visa, with processing that can run several weeks. Submit early — visa demand will be elevated around the tournament.
Most travelers can enter visa-free for up to 180 days. You receive an FMM tourist permit at the border, or fill it out online before departure. Going to matches in both Mexico and the US requires separate entry authorisation per country.
Visa-exempt travelers need an eTA — $7 CAD, applied via the online form. A full visa, where required, should be filed for early. Turnaround is generally fast but can lag around major events. An issued eTA stays attached to your passport for 5 years.
Currency & Costs
USD is the currency. Credit and debit cards are taken pretty much everywhere. Expect to tip: 18-20% at sit-down restaurants, $1-2 per drink at bars. Expect $15-25 for casual-restaurant meals and $8-15 at fast-food spots. Inside the stadiums, food and drinks are markedly pricier.
Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). USD is widely taken in tourist areas, but paying in pesos delivers better rates. Customary tipping runs 10-15%. At $5-10 per meal in local restaurants, Mexico is the most budget-friendly host nation. ATMs are widely available.
CAD is the currency. Card payments — contactless included — are accepted everywhere. 15-20% is the standard restaurant tip. Meal pricing tracks the US, around $15-25 per plate. Pay attention — Canadian displayed prices are tax-exclusive, meaning your final bill runs 13-15% over what the menu shows.
Weather (June-July)
Conditions swing widely by city. Southern venues (Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C) are hot, humid affairs. Out West (LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C) conditions are mild and dry. On the East Coast (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C) it's warm and humid. For outdoor stadiums: sunscreen, a hat, and stay hydrated.
The rainy season starts in June. Altitude in Mexico City (2,200m) keeps days moderate at 25°C, with evenings turning markedly cooler. Layers plus a rain jacket are recommended. Guadalajara and Monterrey run hotter at 30-33°C, and more humid. Afternoon thunderstorms happen often but tend to pass quickly.
This is the best weather window in Canada. Around 26°C is typical for Toronto, with occasional humid stretches. Vancouver averages 22°C, sees up to 16-hour days, and gets little rainfall. Outdoor events feel comfortable in either city. For evening matches, plan on light layers.
Practical Info
Type A/B sockets, 120V. English is the main spoken language. Uber and Lyft serve all of the host cities. Hotels, cafes, and airports usually offer free WiFi. Pick up an eSIM or prepaid SIM at the airport for mobile data. Transit varies sharply: New York is excellent; Dallas and Houston are limited.
Power: Type A/B plugs at 127V (US-compatible). Spanish is the primary language though English is widely understood in tourist areas and near stadiums. Uber and DiDi run smoothly in all three host cities. A local Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIM bought at the airport handles cheap data and calls.
A/B plugs, 120V — same as US. Toronto: English. Vancouver: English/French. Both cities have Uber service. Transit is reliable; Toronto TTC and Vancouver SkyTrain each link to their stadium. Mobile plans in Canada are costly — visitors should look at an eSIM or prepaid SIM.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the US visa process work from India?

File DS-160 online, pay the MRV fee, and schedule an interview at one of the US Mission posts: Embassy New Delhi, or Consulates General in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Hyderabad. Wait times vary by post and have historically ranged from 2 months to over a year — check each post's wait-time estimate before applying, as scheduling at a post with shorter queues is allowed. If you already hold a valid, unexpired US visa (including one issued up to 48 months prior), you likely qualify for interview waiver (drop box) renewal, which processes in 2 to 4 weeks. Bring strong ties-to-India evidence and a clear trip plan.

Is Air India direct or a one-stop itinerary cheaper?

Varies significantly. Air India's DEL-EWR, DEL-ORD, DEL-SFO and BOM-JFK direct flights often price competitively, particularly in premium economy and business cabins where AI has refreshed hard product. For economy basic, one-stop itineraries via DXB (Emirates), DOH (Qatar) or IST (Turkish) can undercut AI by 15 to 25%, with the trade-off of total travel time (22 to 26 hours vs 14 to 16). Virgin Atlantic and BA via LHR are competitive for East Coast matches. United's EWR-DEL and SFO-DEL can be cheaper than AI on some dates. Compare total time plus price before booking.

What's the difference between Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore as departure points?

Delhi (DEL) has the widest direct US network: EWR, ORD, SFO, IAD on Air India. Mumbai (BOM) has EWR and JFK on AI — critical for matches at MetLife Stadium. Bangalore (BLR) has SFO on AI, which makes West Coast matches accessible without changing in DEL or BOM. For fans in Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata, a domestic connection to DEL or BOM followed by the international leg is usually cheaper than flying internationally from the secondary airport. Air India's recent fleet modernisation (new 777-300ERs, new 787s) means cabin experience is improving — the old complaints about AI are being addressed.

Do I need visas for Canada and Mexico separately?

For Canada: Indian passport holders need a visitor visa (TRV). Processing time is variable — some applicants get decisions in weeks, others wait months. Apply through IRCC online early. A valid US visa may allow you to visit Canada under certain transit programmes, but a separate Canadian visa is the safer path. For Mexico: Indian passport holders with a valid US visa can enter Mexico visa-free — a major advantage. Without a US visa, apply at the Mexican Embassy in New Delhi. The US visa is the single most important piece of paperwork for the whole tournament.

Which US city has the best Indian community support?

New Jersey and the New York metro have the largest Indian-American population, with strong community presence in Jersey City, Edison, Iselin, and Queens. For a fan staying in the NYC area, Indian restaurants (vegetarian, Jain, Gujarati, South Indian) are abundant and match-day transit to MetLife Stadium is straightforward. The Bay Area (SFO) has the second-largest Indian community, concentrated in Fremont, Sunnyvale and the South Bay — ideal for West Coast matches. Chicago has a large community in Devon Avenue. Washington DC has strong Indian infrastructure in Virginia. Every major US host city has at least one high-quality Indian restaurant.

Can I use my Air India mileage (AI Flying Returns) for award seats?

Possible but competitive. Air India's award chart releases 355 days out, and World Cup peak dates will be heavily contested. If you hold AI miles, book the moment the schedule opens. Star Alliance partner awards booked through United MileagePlus, Air Canada Aeroplan or Singapore KrisFlyer can sometimes show AI space that AI's own tool does not. For business-class redemptions, AI Flying Returns offers reasonable levels on partner Star Alliance — but availability near peak travel days evaporates quickly. Paid economy is usually the more reliable path.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Indian fans?

Not legally required, but absolutely essential. US medical costs dwarf Indian hospital pricing — a single emergency room visit can cost USD 5,000 to USD 20,000, and complex care runs into the hundreds of thousands. Buy a USD 200,000+ medical cover policy with explicit United States inclusion from a reputable Indian insurer (Tata AIG, ICICI Lombard, HDFC ERGO, Bajaj Allianz) or international provider. Check cashless hospital network coverage in US host cities — several insurers partner with CIGNA or similar US administrators. Confirm 24-hour helpdesk support in English and Hindi, plus trip-interruption cover in case FIFA reschedules a fixture.
